Data Science and Statistics

From Data Analysis to Strategic Solutions

The interdisciplinary field of data science sits at the intersection between statistics, data analysis, and informatics in order to derive knowledge from data. It uses techniques and theories from many fields within the context of mathematics, computer science, information science, and domain science. Data science deals with the quantitative and qualitative data from images, text, sensors, transactions, and customer information, and emphasizes prediction and action.

Why Choose Data Science and Statistics?

With data generation at an all-time high, industries seek professionals who can turn this wealth of data into actionable insights. Our program equips you with the expertise to harness, analyze, and interpret data, transforming you into an invaluable asset in virtually any field. In a world where data drives decision-making, a degree in Data Science and Statistics stands as your gateway to a life-long career that stays relevant amidst evolving technological landscapes.

What Will You Study?

In addition to general courses in Programming, Calculus, and Probability & Statistics, students will specialize in either the Statistics or the Data Science track. Through courses in mathematics and the interdisciplinary field of data science, you'll be well-versed to enter the field. Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. Data science blends the methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge from data and apply that knowledge across a broad range of applications.

To break into these high-paying, high-demand roles, many students benefit from earning an advanced degree. Data scientists are highly-educated; about 88% earn a master's degree, and 46% continue to earn a PhD. Our program at Western New England University is well-positioned to guide students to successfully transition to either graduate study or enter the field following graduation.
